Pattern for a crocheted "diamond bracelet" ;-)

I guess these diamonds have been my best friend lately, to loan the classic song singed by Marilyn Monroe in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. And because friendship should be shared, here comes a little pattern for crocheting friendship diamond bracelets. And who wouldn’t want to wear “a diamond bracelet” or what :-). 

I think this is a pretty quick project and it is also good for using all those bits and pieces of yarn. And you can also easily crochet a longer ribbon as well with this pattern if you want to make a hat strap, belt or maybe handles for a bag. Bracelets in these pictures are crocheted with different cotton and alpaca yarns suitable for hook sizes 2 and 2,5. Brands I have used are Hjertegarn Cotton 8, Hjertegarn Alpaca silk, Schachenmayr Catania and a Finnish yarn Novita Kotiväki. I would recommend to use cotton yarn for this project though, because it is often easier to crochet than for example alpaca yarn when working with several colors at the same time. When it comes to choosing color, I recommend bright colors for pattern color. You want your diamonds to be seen of course :-).

A few words about the technique I have used in the pattern. I recommend you to first take a look at the basic pattern for crocheting diamonds which you can download on Ravelry. In this tapestry crochet technique you work back and forth normally on both sides and all the stitches are crocheted into both loops. Stitches are crocheted with half double crochets (hdc) and widening the diamond and decreasing the width are made one stitch at a time each row with changing the color. Stitches are never added or decreased in this technique, because the pattern follows the natural stitch pattern of half double crochet, so the only thing changing is the color. You see a chart for two different kind of bracelets below. I hope that these also help you on the way. The chart shows the right side of the work, but helps you to crochet the wrong side as well. When it comes to the basic pattern on the left side, there are three diamonds in the chart, but I have often crocheted four to make the bracelet go round my wrist as you for example see in the picture next to the chart. 

When crocheting tapestry crochet, you always carry along the resting yarn inside the stitch. When switching color, make the final yarn over with the new color. When working these diamonds carry along the resting yarn during each stitch when crocheting the right side of the work. When crocheting the wrong side, don’t carry the resting yarn inside the first stitch after the color change but pick it up after that. This little trick gives diamonds clearer lines. 

I also have the habit of doing so that I make one hdc into the same stitch as ch 2 at the beginning of each row (see the picture on the left side below). At the end of the row I jump over the last hdc of the previous row and make the last hdc to ch 2 of the previous row instead (see the picture on the right side below). I think this way the edges are quite pretty and even, but I know there are other ways as well of course (look for example for tutorials on YouTube). 

Abbreviations (US crochet terms)

sl st               slip stitch

ch                  chain

hdc                half double crochet (half treble in UK)

I also use terms background color (green) and motif color (white) in this pattern. This pattern is written for right-handed crocheters and the chart is for right-handed as well, but if you are left-handed and have difficulties with crocheting the pattern, take contact so I try to help you (I am left-handed too).  

1. Chain 7 + 2 (or 9 + 2 if you want to make the broader bracelet).

2. (Right side of the work) Crochet 1 hdc into third chain from the hook. Crochet 1 hdc into each ch = 7 hdc /9 hdc. So ch 2 in the beginning is not counted as one hdc. Chain 2 and turn the work.

3.-4. Crochet 1 hdc into each stitch and end the row with ch 2 (as at the end of each row during the whole work) and turn the work. Here you can also crochet two more rows with the background color to leave more space for a button. 

5. (Wrong side of the work) Time to join in a new color and start crocheting the pattern according the little chart above. Start from them bottom right corner of the chart. As you see there are half squares at the end of each row, and these mark ch 2 that you have to do at the beginning of each row. Here below I have also written how to crochet the few first rounds to make the pattern hopefully easier to crochet.

So, during this first row with two colors, crochet first 2 hdc with the background color, and when doing the 3rd hdc, make the last yarn over with the motif color. Below pictures hopefully show how to do with the yarns during this row. Remember to lift the yarn of the background color to the wrong side of the work before taking the motif color on the hook, and do this always on the wrong side. As you see an arrow also points to the yarn in the first picture below. Crochet 1 hdc with motif color, but make the last yarn over with the background color (second picture below). Leave the motif color here and crochet rest of the round with only background color (third picture below).

6. On the right side crochet 2 hdc with the background color and then 2 hdc with the motif color, and then 3 hdc with the background color according the chart. Remember to carry the background color inside the motif color during both stitches. 

7. (Wrong side) Crochet 2 hdc with background color, 3 hdc with the motif color and 2 hdc with the background color. When crocheting the first stitch with the motif color, remember to lift the yarn to the wrong side (first picture below), then crochet the first stitch without carrying the yarn inside the motif color (second picture below). 

Continue as before the next two rows. The diamond is now 5 stitches wide and during the following row start decreasing the width of the diamond with one stitch from five to four on the right side of the work. Below you see a picture where you see that right-handed crocheter make decreases to the left side of the diamond (and left-handed to the right side). 

   

After finishing the first diamond, crochet one row with the background color before starting the next diamond. When it comes to motif color I have just simply left it to the last stitch of the previous diamond, and then picked it up on the hook again (as you see below), but there are different ways here as well - you can for example cut the yarn of motif color or crochet it inside just one stitch in the middle of the row during the row between diamonds etc. 

After crocheting the pattern, crochet the amount of rows you want with the background color. I have usually crocheted three rows if I have crocheted 5 rows in the beginning. You can also crochet around the bracelet with slip stitches or single stitches. I have done so with almost every bracelet and during the round have also made the loop for a button with 9-10 chain stitches. You may of course want to make another amount of rows in the beginning and in the end than I have done.

I have been crocheting these diamonds for a year and a half now, and I crochet them automatically, so I am a bit nervous if I have remembered to tell all the important steps. I am also not yet sure how precisely I should explain the basic technique in individual patterns because the basic pattern is also separately available for free. Nimenvaihdos blogissa - Change of blog address

Päätin, että on toiminimen myötä aika tehdä muutos myös blogin nimessä sen mukaiseksi. Virkkausyhteisö kun on maailmanlaajuinen, niin tämä nimi ilman ääkkösiä ja varsin lyhyenä on toivottavasti myös helpompi kansainvälisesti. Ja se mikä on puuhasteluna alkanut monta vuotta sitten on kehittynyt käsityötaidoksi. Uutta opittavaakin aina riittää ja sehän se myös hienoa virkkauksessa onkin, että tekniikka mahdollistaa niin monenmoista. Blogin ulkoasu on myös muuttumassa vastaamaan uutta nimeä elokuun aikana, mutta vielä pienen hetken muuta uutta ei ole kuin tämä osoite. 

Jos muuten itse haluat päästä eroon blogspot-osoitteesta, niin Beauty of life -blogista löytyy kätevät askel askeleelta -ohjeet nimen vaihtamiselle. 

Kuvat yllä eivät kyllä nyt tätä tarinaa ihan suoraan kerro, mutta siinä näkyy viimeaikaisia kirjovirkkausprojekteja ja mitä tällä hetkellä työstän. Ylinnä on kait boho-tyylinen pieni laukku jonka hihnaa ja mahdollista muuta koristetta vielä mietin. Kaunis värikäs tupsu on Marrakechista, ihastuimme niihin kaikki ja taisimme ostaa erään kauppiaan koko varaston tyhjäksi :-). Kokoa laukulla on 21 x 25 cm. Tykkään tästä kuviosta ja lopputuloksesta tosi paljon, siksi näin monta kuvaakin.

Vaikka kuvio näyttää monimutkaiselta, on se loppujen lopuksi ihan näpsäkkä virkata (syntyi viikonlopun aikana muun ohella), ja nyt mietinkin maton virkkaamista tällä kuviolla. Kuvion rytmi on vielä mielessä epäselvä ja materiaaliksikin haluaisin jotain uutta. Se, että tällainen kuvio oli mahdollista virkata, vaati toki kuvion piirtämistä, ja tästä kiitos vektorigrafiikalle. Tein sillä oman kaaviopohjan näille timanteille, niin nyt on helpompi hahmottaa kuvioita ja niiden suhteita. 

Yllä on myös vihreäsävyinen perustimanttipussukka, se on sopivan kokoinen vaikka virkkuukoukuille. Paljon on nyt siis tullut tehtyä erilaisia pussukoita, mutta niitähän aina tarvitsee kaikille pikkutavaroille, ja voi antaa kivoiksi lahjoiksi. Samalla näitä pieniä töitä virkkaamalla paranee omat taidot ja uskaltaa lähteä soveltamaan kuvioita muihin virkkaustöihin.

Niin, ja sitten toiminimen ja blogin nimestä Hilja Design. Minulla on monta vuotta ollut mielessä toinen nimi, jonka olisin halunnut ja tarina sen taustalla oli omassa mielessä valmiiksi mietittynä. Nimi ei sitten ollut kuitenkaan enää saatavilla, kun en ollut sitä Ytj:stä tarkistanut, googlaillut vain. Nimen toisen version takana on kuitenkin uudehko hyvinkin kannatettava yritys eli ekokauppa. Piti siksi keksiä toinen perusta ja nimi, jonka takana seisoa ja tyytyväinen olen tähänkin nimeen.

Nimi Hilja tulee isoäidiltäni ja tässä yllä Hilja (ja Simo) kesäiltana 1970-luvun puolivälissä (eivätkö vanhat ihmiset olekin usein kauniita). Kuvan Hilja oli siis isoäitini, ompelija ammatiltaan. Nimi heijastelee siten perittyjä käsityöperinteitä ja -taitoja, mutta me lisäämme omamme niihin ja luomme uusia aikaa heijastelevia malleja. Useinhan sitä virkkauksesta puhuessa ihmiset vähän naureskelevat, mutta kun kertoo ja näyttää mitä itse ja muut tekevät tällä käsityön saralla, niin mieli on ainakin osalla muuttunut.   

Nimi Hiljahan tulee myös sanasta hiljaisuus. Päivätyöni on äänekästä, vaativaa ja siinä on paljon yllätyksiä, joten vapaa-ajalla hiljaisuudella ja omaan tahtiin tekemisellä on suuri merkitys omassa elämässä = tasapaino. Kieltenopena pidän myös siitä, miten nimi Hilja ikään kuin helkkyy ja läikkyy suussa sitä lausuttaessa ja on tosiaan helppo kansainvälisestikin käytettynä.   

Ja sitten tuo kunnioitustakin herättävä sana design, mutta ajattelin uskaltaa seisoa senkin takana. Ajattelin toki englanninkielisiä termejä "pattern design" "crochet design" jne. Ajattelin sitä, että oma pyrkimys käsityöläisenä on se, että ne ohjeet ja mahdolliset käsityöt, joita tarjoan, ovat mietittyjä ja mahdollisimman mukavia teknisesti myös virkata. 

Ja Instagram-käyttäjänimen olen myös vaihtanut vastaamaan yrityksen nimeäni, eli kuvan ilo_et_elo ei enää ole käytössä vaan sinne minua voi tulla moikkaamaan @HiljaDesign ja #hiljadesign.

Oikein hyvää viikon jatkoa sinulle, palailen toivottavasti vielä uudelleen tämän viikon puolella. Päivätöissäkin riittää jo samalla puuhaa, ja arki hakee uutta muotoaan. Olen kuitenkin iloinen, että saan koko ajan askeleita otettua käsitöiden saralla, kun tästä olen niin pitkään puhunut ja haaveillut. Samahan se kai on kuin ison kiven vierittäminen mäkeä alas, alussa tarvitaan paljon voimaa ja sitten se pyörii eteen päin itsekseen, niin kuin kaiken uuden oppimisen kanssa.

I decided to change my blog name and address to Hilja Design, the name of my small craft business I am starting besides my job as a teacher. The only new thing here at the moment is this address, but I hope to change the rest during this month. 

Here above you also see some recent crochet projects of mine. In one of the pictures above you also see Hilja (and Simo), one summer night in the middle of 1970's. They have just been to evening sauna by the lake and swim as is typical Finnish. So Hilja was my grandma, who was a seamstress working independently, but living on a farm she also for example grew her own linen, spinned yarn, weaved fabrics and rugs etc, as was common in Finland at that time. Her name takes me back to her warm lap I remember. When choosing her name to my business I was also thinking about the crafting tradition that goes forward in generations. She of course, crafted and sewed out of necessity, but for us crafting is more a pleasure or an act of love and a way to well being. I am not only looking back at traditions as a maker and crocheter, we learn the skills and add our own in traditions. 

I also like the name Hilja because it comes from the Finnish word hiljaisuus, quietness. I have a noisy work so crafting means the quiet time for me = balance. And when pronouncing the name it sort of jingles in mouth, which I as a language teacher, like very much. So these are my thoughts behind the name. And now I hope to proceed to some pattern releases soon.

Kasvitieteellinen puutarha ja vihreän sävyjä - Botanical garden and shades of green

Jatketaan retkeilyä vielä toisen postauksen verran. Pieni keidas muistettavaksi  ja nautittavaksi marraskuun saapuessa tännekin kuvina tallennettuna. Tänä kesänä ei ole tullut kummempia reissuja tehtyä, ainoastaan pieniä päivänmittaisia, mutta syksyllä sitten taas.

Koukullakin on vihreitä sävyjä. Tästä mallista on tainnut tulla minulle vähän kuin isoäidinneliö, eli pieniä pussukoita syntyy sen kummemmin ajattelematta jämälangoista ja tuoreiltakin keriltä. Kuvan kirja on mainio Fine Little Dayn kirja, käsittääkseni tulossa englanniksi myös pian. Helmetin kautta näyttää myös olevan saatavilla lainattavaksi. Itse olen tästä kirjasta, sen teksteistä ja kuvien tunnelmista tykännyt kovasti.

Some green shades on my hook as well. This pattern has become like granny square for me, I make these little purses without much thinking. Book above is the lovely book from Fine Little Day. Remember hearing somewhere that it is coming soon in English as well. I have really enjoyed the pictures, texts and the feeling of the book.

Chambres d'Amis Marrakesh

Chambres d'Amis, our home during the wonderful Cool Crochet Workshop in April,  is an inspiring small hotel consisting of six rooms and a wonderful roof top terrace in the old town of Marrakesh and only a couple of hundred meters from Djma El Fna Square. I was happy to stay there. I guess you can probably find more luxurious hotels in Marrakesh, but I feel that this one has been created with heart and has a cozy atmosphere. There are many lovely details to look at for a creative soul and I felt that it was feeding my own creativity, but yet it was also such a calming place to come back to after our daily adventures in Marrakesh and beyond. 

This blog post has waited to be published, but my photos from our wonderful workshop are such a mess after taking pictures with different devices that organizing and getting them to same size was quite a task. I also have to apologize the poor quality of the pictures. Some of them are taken with I pad and it doesn't do that well in poor lightning. Hope you can still get the feel of the place, - and almost hear the birds singing in the background and the occasional calls to prayer.

But without any further babble, lets knock on the door and step inside the riad and go for a short tour.

Olen pitkään halunnut näyttää kuvia huhtikuun virkkaustyöpajamme inspiroivasta hotellista, ystävien huoneista eli Chambres d'Amis. Chambres d'Amis on pieni hotelli, jossa on vain kuusi huonetta, mahtava kattoterassi kilpikonnineen ja kukkineen ja sijainti on mainio keskellä vanhaa kaupunkia, parin sadan metrin päässä Djma El Fna -aukiolta.  Marrakeshistä löytyy varmaan hotelleja, jotka tarjoavat enemmän luksusta sitä kaipaaville, mutta Ankin ja hänen henkilökuntansa luoma hotelli on kodikas ja luotu sydämellä.  Luovalle sielulle hotellissa oli monia kauniita detaljeja katseltavaksi ja jotka ruokkivat omaa luovaa sielua. Tänne oli myös rauhoittavaa aina palata päivän seikkailujemme jälkeen Marrakeshissa ja sen ulkopuolella. 

Kuvien laatu on valitettavasti vaihteleva, koska olen ottanut ne eri laitteilla ja välillä valaistus on I padille ollut vaihteleva. Toivottavasti kuvista välittyy kuitenkin hotellin tunnelma  ja voit melkein kuulla rukouskutsut ja lintujen laulavan taustalla. 

Mutta lopetetaan jaarittelu, koputetaan oveen ja astutaan sisään riadiin.

Nämä pyörylät ovat Hammamissa, kylpylässä käytettäviä pesusieniä, mutta Ank on tehnyt niistä seinätaidetta huoneisiin lisäämällä strasseja.

Ottaisin kyllä tällaiset laatat keittiöön tai mihin tahansa huoneeseen.

I would love to have a kitchen with these kind of tiles on the floor or any room.

Kaikki kattoterassin kukat ja alakerran palmut olivat kyllä ilo sielulle pimeän talven jälkeen.

All these flowers were such a pleasure for my soul after the dark Finnish winter.

Huhtikuun Deko-lehden numerossa oli muuten Ankin koti Marrakeshissa esiteltynä. Jutun otsikkona oli Marrakeshin helmi. Ankin hotelli on mielestäni toinen helmi.

In the April issue of Deko, a Finnish interior design magazine, we had the possibility to peak in Ank's lovely home in Marrakesh as well. The title was called "the pearl of Marrakesh". I think her hotel is another one.
